Riot Backtracks on Paid Classic Skins in League of Legends Classic After Player Backlash

Jul 20, 2026

League of Legends Classic, Riot Games' new PBE mode reviving pre-2014 gameplay, faced mixed player reactions over defaulting to updated visuals rather than true classic skins. After feedback, Riot made classic skins the default appearance within days of launch. Developer Brian Feeney explained the mode blends multiple eras rather than one patch, since players' "best era" varies by when they started. Future updates will let the community vote on which patches to add once live.

League of Legends Classic, a new mode that revisits older versions of the MOBA by bringing back previous gameplay elements and character designs from 2013 and earlier, has entered Riot Games' public test environment. The mode has since received mixed feedback from players, with much of the discussion focusing on how the game handles its classic visuals.

When the mode first arrived on the Public Beta Environment (PBE), players were presented with updated champion models, voice lines, and ability effects by default. Classic skins were available separately through tokens or purchase options, leading some players to argue that the mode did not fully match expectations for a return to League's earlier years.

Following community feedback, Riot adjusted the system within days of launch. In a video update published on July 16, Riot developer Brian "FeralPony" Feeney confirmed that classic skins would become the default appearance for champions who have them, with those skins now unlocked automatically for players testing the mode on PBE.

Feeney also addressed broader feedback surrounding League of Legends Classic's design direction, particularly Riot's decision not to recreate a single historical patch. Instead, the team chose to combine elements from different periods of the game's history, aiming to represent a wider range of player preferences.

According to Riot's player surveys, opinions on the "best era" of League varied significantly depending on when players began playing the game. The team noted that players often viewed the period around their own introduction to League as the most memorable, while future updates to the mode will allow the community to vote on which patches should be introduced once it reaches live servers.
